How to Paint a Wine Bottle: Tarot-Inspired Florida Style

One of my favorite creative challenges is transforming everyday objects into storytelling pieces—and painting a wine bottle might be one of the most joyful ways to do just that. For this project, I was invited to participate in the Mills 50 Artist Series Fundraiser, happening December 10th, where local artists paint original artwork on bottles of Quantum Leap Winery wines. These one-of-a-kind bottles are auctioned off in a silent auction to help support Mills 50’s vibrant public art projects across Orlando.

For this year’s event, I chose something both mystical and deeply Florida: a wine bottle inspired by the Empress tarot card.
Traditionally, The Empress represents creativity, abundance, nurturing energy, beauty, and the flourishing of new ideas—all themes that felt perfect for blending with Florida’s lush, colorful personality.

My Florida-inspired Empress features flowing, bright details, nature motifs, and a touch of tropical magic. Turning a smooth glass bottle into a canvas takes patience, layering, and a bit of artistic intuition. Here’s how you can try it too!

Tips for Painting a Wine Bottle

Before you begin, prep the bottle by removing labels and cleaning the surface well so the paint adheres smoothly. Then follow these tips for a successful piece:

  • Sketch your idea lightly first, either directly on the bottle with a washable pencil or on paper for reference.

  • Use acrylic paint (or acrylic paint pens) for smooth application and vibrant color.

  • Paint in thin layers to avoid streaking and create clean lines.

  • Let the first layer dry completely before adding a second layer—this prevents lifting or peeling. Glass can be tricky, so patience pays off.

  • Add details last, such as outlines, highlights, or metallic accents to make the artwork pop.

  • Seal your finished piece with a clear acrylic varnish for protection and a long-lasting shine.

  • Have fun with the curves of the bottle—its shape can guide your composition in interesting ways.
